Training Tips for Travel Agents

Consistent training is one of the best ways to grow as a travel agent. Knowledge and experience are our superpowers.

Clients expect us to know about every place on the planet. You know it’s true! 🤣 When a booking opportunity comes up for a specific destination, supplier, cruise line, resort, or specialty trip, we may not always have time to stop and complete a full training before responding.

The more you train and the more bookings you work through, the stronger you become as an agent. You may not know everything yet, and none of us do, but you start to feel more comfortable and prepared when a lead lands in your inbox, even if it isn’t one of the destinations you’ve booked before.

That confidence comes from knowing:

“I may not know everything yet, but I know how to find the right answer.”

Make Training Part of Your Routine

So, try to make training a priority and part of your weekly routine.

Start by making a short list of your goals. Maybe you want to learn more about a specific destination, become more familiar with a preferred supplier, or build confidence in a certain type of travel. Then, every month or every couple of weeks, choose one or two areas to focus on and make a realistic plan you can stick with.

You can find webinars inside IV Agent DASH. Revisit one of our exclusive IV Agent webinars, register for a suggested supplier webinar, or check out the links to on-demand supplier webinars.

Supplier and destination webinars often include helpful details you may not find just browsing the agent portal. This could include sales tips, current promotions, marketing ideas, destination updates, resort construction timelines, opening dates, temporary closures, and other agent resources.

You may even discover tools already available in the portal that you didn’t realize were there. This kind of insider information is why people hire us!

Register Even If You Cannot Attend Live

Even if you can’t attend a training or webinar live, it can still be worth registering. Many times, suppliers will send a recording link or access to all of the resources offered during the training afterward.

Then, you can revisit the recording when you have time.

Save What You May Need Later

As you watch webinars or attend live trainings, take notes and grab screenshots of anything you may want to reference later.

Sometimes you might be able to pop something right into a social media post to share with your followers!

If you are lucky enough to score a contact name, number, or email you didn’t already have, make sure to update your CRM or contact list. These are like gold in our industry!

Don’t Skip Topics Outside Your Main Focus

Don’t skip a training just because the topic isn’t your main focus. You never know when something might be useful later.

Can’t fully watch it? Let it play in the background while you work, while you are waiting to pick up your kids from school, or while you are handling simple tasks. You can still absorb important information.

Pro Tip: Turn Your Notes Into Tools

You can also upload your notes and screenshots into your favorite AI tool and ask it to help you create:

  • Mini guides
  • Cheat sheets
  • Client talking points
  • Quick reference sheets
  • Social post ideas

 

These can become resources you use again and again in your business.

Another Great Reason to Attend Trainings

Another great reason to attend trainings and webinars: many include drawings for trips, gift cards, swag, or other prizes.

These giveaways are real, and someone has to win!

Getting a chance to visit the destinations you sell is also one of the best ways to build firsthand knowledge and confidence.

Share Your Training Wins

After you complete a training, share your win with the group.

Did you learn something others could benefit from? Did you become a specialist or complete a certification? Post about it so we can celebrate with you!

Your takeaway or victory may be exactly what another agent needs to hear, and it might motivate someone else to keep learning too.

Make a Plan

This week, choose one training goal and make a simple plan.

Ask yourself:

  • What destination, supplier, cruise line, resort, or specialty trip do I want to learn more about?
  • Is there a webinar, certification, or on-demand training I can complete?
  • What notes, screenshots, or resources should I save for later?
  • Is there something I learned that I can share with the group?

Small, consistent steps can make a big difference over time.

The more knowledge we share with each other, the stronger we all become.
